The work done by our faculty and research scholars has immensely contributed to the knowledge of plant sciences. Many have published outstanding books and monographs;
Many have reported a wide spectrum of angiosperms;
Mycologists of the Department have studied the fungal diversity of the region;
Pteridologists have gifted several species of ferns;
several important families of plants such as orchids, anthuriums, zingibers and palms.
The tissue culture methods developed by the faculty of the Department are now being widely used in the cultivation of banana, vanilla and several spices. Many faculty members have been awarded honorary fellowships including Nuffield Foundation Fellowship, Smithsonian Fellowship, Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship, DANIDA Fellowship, Nehru Centenary Fellowship and Sibbald Fellowship.
This department's faculty members have won several prestigious awards, including the Prof. Puri Award, the Y.D. Tiagi Gold Medal, the Prof. P. Maheshwari Award, the Dr. V. V. Sivarajan Gold Medal, and the Tod F. Steussy Gold Medal. Prof. K.S. Manilal and Prof. M. Sabu earned the prestigious Dr. Janaki Ammal award. One of India's highest civilian honors, the Padma Shri, was recently bestowed upon Prof. K.S. Manilal. Several eminent teachers have served the Department in the past and contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Department.
