A WARM WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

The Department was established in 1963 as one of the four Departments at the Calicut centre of the University of Kerala, the Department came under the University of Calicut when it was established in 1968.

The Academic activites were in full swing when Prof. B. K. Nayar, the first Head of the Department assumed office. The faculty of the Department have done extensive research in the areas of Angiosperm Taxonomy, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Ethno Botany, Floristics, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Morphogenesis, Morphology, Mycology, Physiology, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology and Pteridology.

The library has a total area of 75 Sq. Mts., with conventional Library Facilities (Reading carrels, lounge area for browsing & relaxed reading, IT zone for accessing e-resources). Book  arrangment is as per DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification).

Departmental library holdings include 6550 printed books (books, back volumes and theses), 100 microfilms, 250 Special collections (text books, reference books, standards, etc.)

Electronic (e-books, e-journals) access through UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium of University of Calicut.

1. ANGIOSPERM TAXONOMY DIVISION

Extensive studies on flowering plants of India had been conducted so far. Present studies include floristic surveys, revisions, systematics and molecular phylogy of several plant families and genera. More than 100 new species were identified and reported.

3. BIOTECHNOLOGY DIVISION

 Standardization of tissue culture protocols of several plants.  Study and exploitation of clonal variations. Studies on molecular systematics. Studies using tools of bioinformatics.

3. BRYOLOGY DIVISION

Extensive survey and documentation on Bryoflora of Western Ghats. Revisionary studies on certain families including molecular analysis. 

4. CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY DIVISION

Studies conducted in this division include chromosome imaging and karyomorphometry, cytotoxic, mutagenic and anticancer assays, studies on genetic polymorphism as well as analysis of essential oils pertaining to aromatic and medicinal plants.

5. CYANOBACTERIAL DIVERSITY DIVISION

Earlier, studies were conducted on biodiversity and taxonomy of Pteridophytes and Bryophytes of Kerala. Now the division is focusing on algal & cyanobacterial research.

6. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE DIVISION

ES

Studies on ecology, plant diversity and environmental science with thrust on biofertilizers, phyto-remediation & bio-accumulation.

7. FUNGAL DIVERSITY DIVISION

Studies on mushrooms and other macro fungi. Extensive survey, documentation and systematic studies.  Four new genera and more than 200 new species identified and reported.

8. GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING DIVISION

Studies on the genetics and breeding of rice, spices, aromatic plants, plantation crops, medicinal plants and ornamental gingers.

9. PLANT PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY

Studies on the physiology of germination, dormancy and flowering. Studies on stress physiology, enzymology and eco physiology.

Calicut University Botanical Garden (CUBG) Consultancy Services

The Department is managing the Calicut University Botanical Garden (CUBG).  It is spread over an area of 25 acres and this botanical garden is acclaimed as one of the best university botanical gardens in India.  Visitors from far and wide come to see the botanical garden and entrance fee is collected from the visitors, which is a major resource generation avenue for the Department.

Calicut University Herbarium (CALI) Consultancy Services

The excellent herbarium facility of the Department (CALI) is made use of by various botanists from India and fee is collected from the visitors coming for reference purpose and this is yet another resource generation avenue for the Department.
